When you think of the most desirable 911s in the United States, you typically don’t think of the 997 Sport Classic. But the reason for that is likely because it was never offered to the US market in the first place—and maybe that’s what makes it among the most desirable after all.

Unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the 911 Sport Classic was a unique allotment of 250 cars that featured incredible details celebrating the heritage of the Porsche 911. Built on the evergreen design of the 997.2 generation, the Sport Classic is finished in a subtle grey with lightly contrasting stripes down the middle, splitting the unique “double-dome” roof. The stripes run from the hood to the underside of the fixed ducktail spoiler which is a clear homage to the legendary Carrera RS 2.7. Underneath that spoiler is a naturally-aspirated 3.8-liter flat-six donated from the Carrera S, but it gains 23 horsepower courtesy of the Porsche Exclusive Powerkit. Total output reaches 408 horsepower and the power was sent exclusively through a short-throw 6-speed manual gearbox.

With the solid foundation of a driver’s car well established, Porsche Exclusive went to work to make sure the Sport Classic stood out on its own. Achieving this meant obsessing over details inside and out to ensure there was nothing else like it, and this is particularly evident in the interior with new materials and designs that were never before used by Porsche but embody class and quality. The Espresso leather interior features woven leather inserts in the adaptive sports seats and door linings, and it’s complemented by light grey piping and stitching along with an Alcantara headliner. Details even down to the special carpeting ensure that the Sport Classic transcends its place in the 997 generation and is instead something uniquely timeless.

In building only 250 units in total, Porsche ensured the Sport Classic would be as exclusive as it looked. But none of those 250 were earmarked for the United States market, making it truly a dream car.

But sometimes dreams come true.

The Sport Classic is eligible to import into the US under the NHTSA’s “Show and Display” rule, yet still very few have landed here or been publicly exhibited. Porsche Warrington acquired serial number 137 and took no time at all putting it in the spotlight at a proper Porsche celebration. The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission honored Holbert Racing with a landmark plaque at the original site of the racing outfit and dealership, with family and team members coming together to establish the team as a permanent fixture of Warrington. Along with our Carrera GT, GT2 RS and GT3 RS, the Sport Classic symbolized Porsche’s history on the road while we were remembering the legacy established on the track.

For decades, it’s been abundantly clear that Porsche’s provenance is a result of major triumph at the world’s biggest motor races, and then applying that pedigree to its road-going sports cars. But few models have successfully captured generations of the 911’s heritage in a single package quite like the Sport Classic, and we’re honored to now be a part of the car’s story.
