What Does Porsche Mean?

What does Porsche mean? It's actually a family name. Porsche was founded as an independent design and engineering firm by Ferdinand Porsche in 1931. That's nearly ninety years ago! By the late 1940s, the two set up shop with around 200 workers in hopes of building sports cars. That's exactly what they did. The first Porsche, the 356, featured a Volkswagen-derived engine and was released in 1948. Although only about 40 were produced, this classic Porsche sports car remains an automotive legend today.

By the 1950s Porsche was making its own engines. In the 1960s, the legendary Porsche 911 was released. The 911 continued to be a best-seller for years, evolving and changing to meet the needs of modern drivers throughout the decades, while still maintaining similar sporting appeal to the original model. In 1999, a new 911 Carrera was introduced. 2003 brought the introduction of the first Porsche SUV, the Cayenne. Today, the new Porsche lineup contains some of the most dynamic, vibrant, and innovative sports cars and luxury SUVs on the road including the Macan, the 718 Cayman, and the Panerama.
